In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.
Q&A WITH NERINA
1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)
I’m Nerina Gurie, 28 years old. I’m a passionate person who appreciates the little and finer things in life. I was born and brought up in a little town on the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal – Umkomaas, it’s a place very close to my heart. I moved up to Johannesburg 6 years ago upon the completion of my studies to join my best friend/sister because we were inseparable. I absolutely love the ocean – it’s my happy place that allows me to be one with myself.
2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
Nephew by blood, son by choice…
My story is a little different… My best friend/sister Navina was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2014. Having been given 3 months to live, Navi asked the doctor if she will be able to have kids as her husband Ajay loved kids, completely ignoring the horrible news that was just given to her. Doctors advised she would never be able to have kids… She told me she will prove doctors wrong, she said she would live longer and have a child. Miracle Veer Ajay was born in July 2015. From the time he was born Navi always told him I’m his second mum and I helped take care of him as she went through more than any normal human being should health wise.
Cancer snatched Navi away in December 2017 and so I’m now Mum to Veer Ajay. To sum this question up, it’s one miracle son and he is 3.
3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?
I wouldn’t say hustle but more of a dream. It’s a nail bar called Polished By Navi. I opened doors on 15 August 2018.
4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?
I was in corporate prior to leaving – the marketing field to be specific. Navi, my sister, and I had a dream of opening up our own nail bar. Cancer took her away but nothing could take away this dream. I took the hugest leap of faith and decided to fulfill our dream… She was beautiful in every aspect and her legacy must live on… I thought, what better way than to invest in making our dream a reality. In memory of my sister Navina (02/09/87 – 06/12/17)
5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?
At the moment it’s a bit of a struggle as I opened the nail bar just 2 weeks ago, however I try and get home in time so we can all eat dinner together and spend some quality time before everyone gets to bed. The idea was looking at the bigger picture in the long run as well – to have the flexibility as Veer grows so I can spend more time with him. Family is everything to me and I will always make time for them because tomorrow isn’t promised. Ohana ❤️
6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?
My sister always validated my decisions… so for me the hardest was having to trust my gut with every decision I made and just run with it – I know she is guiding me.
It’s overwhelming doing something this close to our hearts and not physically having her there to share in this with me. So for me it’s the emotional aspect that takes its toll.
I’m extremely blessed to have an amazing support structure which comprises of my family, partner, best friends and friends!
7. What have been the highlights?
The fact that Navi’s blessings have been showered on us from the start in abundance. Not everyone has an angel guiding their business.
I have learnt so much and have grown during this journey thus far!
Being able to meet incredible and amazing people that have been inspired and touched by Navi’s story. It’s a huge highlight that even in death her life story is an inspiration through the medium of the company.
I have been given feedback that the experience at the nail bar was a warm, loving and beautiful one… it’s so fitting because that’s everything my sister was and more and I want to exude some of her qualities which will touch the lives of many!
8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?
You have to do something you never did in order to get something you never had.
Trust your heart and gut… I always believe that no dream is borne without the ability of making it come true. Knowledge is invaluable and it’s something no one can take away from you. Learn as much as you can and never let fear take away your dreams. Positivity and visualization is everything. Believe in what you do and others will believe in you! Remember it’s hard work, but anything worth it doesn’t come easy! There’s absolutely nothing a woman cannot do, during her tears and hardships her strength will always shine.
