I have read a lot of books in my life. Some months I read two novels, other months I can read up to to twenty (yay for ebooks!) Reading is more than a hobby for me, it’s a passion and something that I need to do to relax and unwind. I say all of this to give you an idea of how many books I have read in my lifetime so that when I tell you that I have NEVER read a book like this before, you know exactly how unusual that must be.
Psychological Thriller, Suspense
Bea and Dan are in love and happily married but frustrated with their life and the stresses around them. They decide to rent out their apartment and spend a few months travelling with their little savings cushion. The first stop on their trip is at Bea’s brother Alex’s hotel. They arrive to find the hotel run down and Alex seeming very unstable.
When Bea’s parents arrive a few days later, Dan can’t understand why Bea is so anxious to leave and get away from them. Liv and Griff Adamson are extremely wealthy and live in a world that Dan has only ever dreamed of. He wonders if Bea is ashamed of him and this starts to put a strain on their relationship.
Tragedy strikes quite suddenly soon after and in a matter of days, everything changes.
Where do I even start. This book left me feeling almost physically sick when I was done. It is the most uncomfortable novel I have ever read. There are only five main characters in the story and by the end of the book, one was dead, I had started losing respect for another, I despised two and hated the last one. Any book that can evoke such strong emotion is a gift.
The seven deadly sins are mentioned in a few places throughout the story as a not so subtle hint at the main personality traits of the characters. There’s definitely Envy, Wrath and Sloth with an emphasis on Greed, Pride and Lust. What’s interesting is how the author took a relatively simple story line and went down a completely different path with it. I’ll be honest, the spelling and grammatical errors got on my nerves but the actual plot was so riveting that I let it slide where normally I would have set the book aside.
This is a story that will stick with you for a very long time.
